The most common misconception of e-bikes and why they may be wrong

Whether you ride e-bikes or not, you are likely to be aware of some of the most commonplace misconceptions of using e-bikes. These bikes have been dividing opinions within the cycling community and some see them as a positive move, whilst others still see them in a negative or lesser light.

So, what are the most common misconceptions of e-bikes and why are they wrong? Let’s take a look at them.

E-bikes are only for overweight people

One of the most common misconceptions about e-bikes is that they are for those people who are overweight or who are lacking in fitness. Sure, the great thing about e-bikes is that they can really help those people who are struggling with their fitness level or who are looking to lose weight, as they can encourage people to cycle, help them to cycle longer and help them tackle challenging rides and bigger inclines, all of which can encourage weight loss and improve their fitness in the long run/

E-bikes are the same as motorbikes

Now we understand where this particular misconception comes from, after all, an e-bike does make you think about motorbikes and fast speeds and engines. However, they couldn’t be more different. The majority of e-bikes are pedal assisted models, which means that the electronic part of it will only help you to achieve a greater speed or take you further when you do cycle. The actual movement and power comes from you. Not only this, but an e-bike will not exceed speeds of 15.5mph, at this speed it will cut out and it will be all down to you.

If you use an e-bike you are lazy

Cyclists will often see that those who choose to ride e-bikes as lazy, or at the very least, lazier than them, and in some ways you can see why they may think this. However, the idea behind an e-bike is that it offers you assistance, it helps you to cycle longer, cycle harder and tackle hills etc that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. Rather than encouraging lazy riding, owning an e-bike helps people who wouldn’t otherwise get out on a bike, try their hand at cycling. Which is much better than driving a car somewhere.

E-bikes are not a real bike

This one can be rather irritating, after all, what is a real bike? A real bike is whatever you want it to be, as long as it has pedals, as long as it has wheels, surely that is what makes it a bike? Sure, a regular bike is the most obvious type of bike that you can buy, however, an e-bike has all the same parts as a regular bike, and therefore, it is just as much of a real bike as other bikes. It just has an added extra to help you on your way.

There are a variety of things that people think about e-bikes, however, if you are considering buying an e-bike for yourself then you need to remember the reasons why you are buying one and the benefits that it can have for you and for your fitness. That was the most important thing to keep in mind.
