It’s hard to beat getting out on a crisp, clear winter’s day when you can see for miles and the cold weather has left the ground firm and dry. These are the days when it’s nice to take it fairly steady so we thought we’d pull together our suggestions for winter routes for road riding, trekking, mountain biking and gravel. Best winter road ride: Tour of Skiddaw quieter roads (36 miles)
Don’t be alarmed by the mention of Skiddaw in the title. This is a good low level ride without too many steep gradients. Check out the perfect coffee stop around the halfway mark at Caldbeck. View in Komoot here.

Best winter trekking ride: Railway Line – St Johns in the Vale -Thirlmere Dam – Stone Circle (15.7 miles)
Take in some easy going cycling with some fantastic destination hotspots. This route enjoys some great car-free tracks and low traffic roads. View on Komoot here.

Best winter mountain bike rides: Threlkeld – Skiddaw House – Bassenthwaite – Dodd (25.2 miles)
This is a really nice out-and-back route with plenty of wild scenery on a hard-packed trail. It’s only technical in some short stretches so it’s great for those with a bit of experience. View on Komoot here.

Best winter gravel ride: Whinlatter – Peil Wyke – Braithwaite
If it’s forest roads and gravel riding you love, then check out this route. It’s great on a fine winter day or a night blast with the lights on. We highly recommend this one for winter fitness. View on Komoot here.
